Furochique
April 2013 Chatoui asked Refinity to cooperate in their 52-week project of 2013. In this project someone is asked to make a bag out of old jeans every week. In April it was Refinity's turn. The bag made by Refinity is inspired by the traditional Japanese folding and knotting technique Furoshiki. The fabric can be used on both sides and there are many possibilities. Approach With Furoshiki you always start with a square cloth. By knotting and folding this in different ways different 'packages' are created. Originally this technique was used to take laundry to wash houses in Japan. Later more products where packed in the square cloths to transport them and currently Furoshiki is also accepted as wrapping paper. The great thing about this technique is that you can create many different items with one piece of fabric and because of that fewer items are needed, you will buy fewer products and use less raw material. In this case we used two old jeans. Because of this 2/3 of the bag is made out of organic cotton. Unfortunately we could not find out which dyes were used. We were also unable to use a single piece of cloth because jeans are made out of smaller pattern pieces. The thread is reused from the Amorfa project and made of (viscose) bamboo and tencel. The handle is made out of bioplastic, beech wood and biodegradable glue with Dammar as its main ingredient. On the photos you can see items that are made with the Furochique design.
