Textiles and non-wovens can be made out an endless number of materials.
Well known materials are for example cotton, linen, hemp, tencel (from eucalyptus), modal (from beech) or synthetic materials like recycled polyester. But there are so many more possibilities. In this article share with you some interesting materials made from fruit and vegetables.

Some vegetables are already more known to be used to make textiles, like PLA made from corn starch, cassava roots, potatoes or sugarcane. There is this continuous debate whether to use land to grow crops for other uses then food (like bio-fuel or the making of textiles)
I am not going to write a whole article about this debate. My opinion is that we need to buy less products in general and use our products longer. If so we use less land to create these products, because we need a lot of land to grow food in an efficient way. The products THAT we design need to be made in such a way they are easy to disassemble which makes it possible to recycle the valuable materials.
However, there are a lot of parts of vegetables and fruits wasted at the moment. And we need to find good uses for that so-called waste. It might be interesting to do an analysis on the best uses for food waste. Making a new material out of it, burning it for energy etc.
Below you find new uses for food waste and the new fascinating fibre made from algae.
